Sawdust Based Pulp
Catalyst pioneered the development of sawdust-based pulp, an environmentally advanced and innovative product with broad applications.

Marketed as Elk Prime™, sawdust-based pulp contributes to high initial tensile strength and ease of refining. We developed it as an economical substitute for NBSK pulps in diverse end-use applications such as tissue, freesheet and specialty papers, and white top linerboard.
Elk Falls Division has an annual manufacturing capacity of 200,000 tonnes. We recover 90 per cent of Elk Prime™ pulp fibres from the sawmilling process. This is an environmentally sound use of sawmill waste residues, which were previously burned as nuisance waste or placed in landfills.
In November 2001, Environment Canada awarded Elk Prime™ Environmental Choice certification. This certification program recognizes products that have a reduced impact on the environment. As a result of certification, Elk Prime™ can now feature the program's EcoLogo™ trademark.
