Corporate Giving
Community investment
Through our payroll and property taxes, Catalyst plays an important role in supporting the social infrastructure of our operating communities. Our operations and local buying make thousands of additional jobs possible and ensures our communities remain vital.
Charitable giving
Our charitable donations focus on literacy, learning, youth development, environment and community safety and involvement. Individual mills support local charities and from time to time donate surplus equipment. Some of the charities we support include:
| The United Way — We direct most of our charitable giving to the United Way, which funds hundreds of groups and ensures our donations stay in our communities and reach those who need it most. Employee contributions in 2006 totalled more than $330,000, with corporate donations adding another $130,000. | |
| Raise-a-Reader — We have supported the Vancouver Sun newspaper's Raise-a-Reader campaign since it first started in 1997. Now held annually in 18 Canadian cities, the campaign raises money for children's literacy programs and resources. Along with volunteer support, we donate newsprint so the newspaper can print a promotional front page on Raise-a-Reader Day. | |
| Easter Seals 24-Hour Relay — For more than 20 years, employees from our company and its predecessors have participated in the Easter Seals 24-Hour Relay, which supports a camping program for B.C. children with disabilities. In 2004, our employee teams were recognized for raising more than $150,000 during their years of participation. Now we are past the $170,000 mark. | |
Scholarships and education
Each year, the company offers scholarships to local students going on to university or college. See our Corporate Donations Policy for more information.
Our support for education also includes:
| Doc Stapleton Memorial Golf Tournament — We invite some of our top customers to the annual golf tournament, which has raised more than US$160,000 for graphic communication students at California Polytechnic University since its inception in 1996. | |
| Malaspina University College — In 2003, we donated $150,000 to the Malaspina University College library. Malaspina University College is located on Vancouver Island, and serves 25,000 full- and part-time students, many of them from our operating communities. | |
