Our Division
Elk Falls began operation in 1952 as a single-line newsprint mill. The paper machine was joined with a kraft pulp mill on the same site in 1956 and two other paper machines followed in 1957 and 1982. Sawdust pulp, a product pioneered at Elk Falls, was first manufactured in 1964 and capacity expanded in 1983. A kraft paper machine was installed in 1966.

With its own modern deep-sea docking facility, Elk Falls is strategically located to connect to major shipping routes and other transportation networks.
Reflecting Catalyst's commitment to innovative product development, Elk Falls was one of the first paper mills in western North America to employ soft-nip calendering technology and is a leading West Coast supplier of these papers.
Mechanical Paper
Elk Falls paper products are used by publishers and commercial printers to produce newspapers, catalogues, magazines, inserts and flyers. With an annual capacity of 526,000 tonnes of mechanical printing papers, Elk Falls is a major contributor to Catalyst's position in the industry and an important supplier to leading publications in North America, Asia and Latin America.
The mill has an annual newsprint capacity of 373,000 tonnes on two paper machines that have been continuously updated to produce one of the newspaper industry's most respected "sheets." As with other Catalyst operations, Elk Falls products are backed with quality, service and technical resources to meet the needs of customers.
Catalyst is also an industry leader in producing lighter basis weight printing papers. These papers offer customers environmental and performance advantages that result in increased pressroom efficiency — newspapers print faster, with fewer breaks and less wasted paper.
Over the years, Elk Falls has expanded its range of mechanical specialty grades to meet the demanding needs of commercial printers who require paper with enhanced qualities such as smoothness, opacity and brightness. These papers contribute to higher graphic impact in flyers and newspaper supplements. The mill produces varying basis weights on a dedicated machine that uses soft-nip calendering technology to impart a smooth finish to the paper.
