Our Division

Powell River Division has come a long way since 1912, when it began operation as the first newsprint mill in Western Canada.

In those early years, the mill produced 109 tonnes of newsprint a day on two machines for newspaper publishers in Vancouver and Seattle.

Today, Powell River produces 470,000 tonnes of mechanical paper a year — 83,000 tonnes of newsprint and 387,000 tonnes of specialty papers — on three modern paper machines for commercial printers and publishers in North America, Latin America and Asia.

Powell River Mill

Located on the south coast of British Columbia, the Powell River mill has earned a reputation for high quality lightweight papers — a reputation that has helped establish Catalyst as the preferred supplier for its customers. The company is a leader in making lighter basis weight papers, which require less fibre to produce than standard weight papers. The result is reduced use of raw materials, chemicals and energy and lower environmental impact per publication.

Mechanical Paper Products

Powell River excels at high-bright and soft-nip calendered papers for cold offset, heatset offset, and rotogravure printing. Our high-bright grades are used in cold offset printing for newspaper inserts and flyers. Soft-nip calendered papers provide the high finish required for heatset offset and rotogravure printing. They are used to print catalogues, magazines, newsletters, inserts, flyers and high-volume publications that require sharp colour reproduction.

Powell River Division is an industry leader in producing thermomechanical fibre to meet the requirements of modern paper machines, and has five thermomechanical pulp lines.

Catalyst's pulp and paper products are largely produced from residual wood fibre — waste wood and sawdust from B.C. sawmills that was once consigned to landfills or burned.

Our Community

Our community of Powell River rests on the mainland, about 145 miles north of Vancouver, between the Strait of Georgia and the pine-covered coastal mountains of the Sunshine Coast. The Regional District of Powell River stretches from Saltery Bay in the south to Lund in the north, with a population of some 19,000.

A popular vacation spot, Powell River is minutes away from the historic Swedish fishing village of Lund, as well as Texada Island, Savary Island, Desolation Sound and plenty of starting points for hikers, kayakers and other outdoor enthusiasts.
