Environmental and Safety Results

The environment and worker safety are two of our top priorities.

Port Alberni Division is committed to continuously reducing the effect of our operations on the environment. We use advanced technology and exacting procedures to ensure we operate efficiently and effectively while consistently complying with government regulations for air emissions, effluent discharges and solid waste generation.

We strive to be among the top 10 Canadian pulp and paper mills in safety performance. Everyone in our workplace has a right to and shares responsibility for worker health and safety.

Environmental effects monitoring

We're proud of our environmental efforts

The Port Alberni Division Environmental Management System (EMS) is registered to the ISO 14001 standard.
We consistently achieve 100 per cent compliance with all permits.
We conduct biennial independent audits to verify our compliance with environmental permits and government regulations. Chain of custody in place regarding sourcing our fibre from sustainably managed forest.
We've reduced carbon dioxide and green house gas emissions from the mill by more than 60 per cent since 1990.
We operate a state-of-the-art biological effluent system to help protect the water quality and ecology of the Alberni Inlet.
We are a partner in the Somass Estuary Management Plan to protect the habitat adjacent to the mill location.
A major remediation project was completed in 2005. A 6 kilometer long wood stave water supply pipeline and creosote contaminated soils were removed and properly disposed of. Stream crossings along the route were upgraded to benefit fish.
We already meet scheduled 2006 federal regulations limiting emissions of dioxins, which are generated by burning wood waste containing high levels of sea salt and are working to reduce emissions even further.
We recycle solid wastes wherever possible, including wood waste, metal, paper and waste oil.
We regularly meet with a local stakeholders committee to gain input and to keep the community informed about our sustainability initiatives, including our partnership with WWF.
Applying WWF tools and expertise, we are developing a holistic set of measures and targets to guide the continuing reduction of its environmental footprint and strengthen the pedigree of products manufactured.
