Catalyst proposes Elk Falls mill restart plan to union locals

Richmond, BC – Catalyst Paper (TSX:CTL) today presented the two union locals representing workers at the Elk Falls paper mill with a plan that would result in the restart of production. The company’s plan provides for the start up of at least two of the mill’s paper machines and a profit sharing system based on the company’s earnings, in return for changes to wages and benefits. Under the company’s plan, the average hourly wage rate would remain in excess of $26.00.

Catalyst achieves PEFC chain of custody at Canadian paper mills

Richmond, BC – Catalyst Paper (TSX:CTL) has obtained chain-of-custody certification from the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) for its four Canadian paper mills. The certification is effective September 1, 2009 and replaces the PricewaterhouseCoopers chain of custody which was implemented in 2004. Unlike the previous system, PEFC enables Catalyst to label select paper products as originating from forests managed to specific certification standards.

Clean-up work about to begin on board the Peralta

Powell River, BC – Catalyst Paper (TSX:CTL) is about to begin on-board cleaning of one of the concrete-hulled ships that form the breakwater at its Powell River Division. Work on the Peralta is scheduled to begin on Tuesday and is expected to last five to six weeks. A barge and crane will be set up alongside the ship to provide marine contractors with access to its top deck and holds.
