Harold Norlund – Crofton

Harold NorlundHarold Norlund joined Catalyst in April 2014 as vice-president and general manager, Port Alberni Division, and brings to his new role at Crofton more than 20 years of cost-reduction and profitability-enhancement experience in operations management, including previous senior roles during his 15 years at the Crofton paper operations. He returned to Canada to join Catalyst after 12 years with NPIUSA Port Angeles, Washington, where he was the executive vice-president. Prior to that, Harold was general manager of the Abitibi Mackenzie paper mill.

Harold graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba and is a Professional Engineer with APEGBC.


Walter Tarnowsky – Port Alberni

Walter Tarnowsky is vice-president and general manager, Port Alberni Division. Walter brings to this role over two decades of experience improving paper machine quality and productivity. After completing his Bachelor of Applied Science (Chemistry/Energy and Fuel Science) at Lakehead University, Walter began his career as Assistant Paper Machine Manager, joined Catalyst in 2000 as Paper Machine Manager, and progressed to Paper Mill Production Manager and then Director, Paper Mill Productivity, where he  oversaw all mill productivity at Catalyst. 


Fred Chinn – Powell River

Fred ChinnFred Chinn is vice-president and general manager, Powell River Division. Fred was employed with Catalyst from 2000 to 2012 as maintenance and engineering manager at the Crofton mill and as paper mill production manager at the Port Alberni mill. Following a period where he was maintenance director at Longview Fibre, Fred returned to Catalyst as general manager of the Port Alberni Division, before assuming his current role as vice-president and general manager. Fred has significant leadership experience in aligning operations and maintenance goals, processes and relationship to achieve sustained improvements in machine efficiency and mill performance.

Fred holds a mechanical engineering degree from Technical University of Nova Scotia and an engineering diploma from St. Mary’s University.


Sean Krajnik - Biron

Sean Krajnik is the Vice President & General Manager of the Biron mill. Sean has extensive experience in the pulp and paper industry with more than 20 years in the coated specialty papers segment working in progressively senior roles, including product development, quality management, technical services, and production and mill management.

Sean holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin and several post-graduate certification programs, including Paper Science, Rapid Lean 6 Sigma and High Performance Management. .



Randy Chicoine - Rumford

Randy is the vice-president and general manager, Rumford Division. He brings over 20 years of paper mill experience to his role. He has a strong track record of motivating teams to achieve results, and leading projects and programs to continuously improve mill productivity, efficiency and performance. 

After completing his Bachelor of Science (Electrical Engineering) at the University of Maine, Randy started his career as a drives and controls engineer and progressed through levels of increasing responsibility, including Maintenance General Superintendent, Operations General Superintendent and Paper Production Manager.

Since joining the Rumford mill in 1992, Randy has gained a tremendous depth of knowledge and was one of five Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Black Belts charged to deploy an effective LSS program at the mill.


Stew Gibson

Stew Gibson Stew Gibson is vice-president, sourcing and technical services. Since joining Catalyst in 1990, Stew has held various leadership roles spanning project management and operations at Catalyst’s mills, including the role of general manager at the Powell River mill from 2008 to 2011. In addition to Stew’s nearly 25 years of technical experience, he provides leadership in aligning reinvestment into Catalyst’s assets to create a sustainable, competitive advantage for Catalyst in the marketplace.

Stew holds a Masters of Engineering degree from the University of British Columbia, an EMBA from the Simon Fraser University Beedie School of Business and is a registered Professional Engineer with APEGBC.
