Some people may think the paper industry is yesterday's news, but for Catalyst, every roll of paper and every bale of pulp presents an opportunity for fresh thinking. It's a chance to move beyond old habits and look at how we do things, why we do things, and what impacts we have on the world around us. It means creating a more sustainable product for our customers by keeping environmental, social, and economic interests in balance.

Unfold Online casts a fresh light on our products and practices that have direct relevance to your business. This first issue talks about the merits of lighter paper and how it can be a sensible option when you consider freight and postage costs, and the savings from using fewer resources during manufacturing and printing.

We hope you find these ongoing communications helpful in making buying decisions that soften your impact on the planet.
Treading Softer on the Planet -- How Lighter Paper Cuts Costs and Emissions
Remember the first "R" in that old environmental saw "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle"?

At Catalyst, we believe reducing paper weight is one of the most sensible ways to lighten our environmental footprint. That's because paper with a lower basis weight (the weight of a standard amount of paper cut to a standard size) requires less fibre, fewer raw materials and chemicals, and less energy to produce. Manufacturing lighter paper also allows us to fit more linear feet per roll and therefore transport more paper per shipment, which translates into fewer trucks on the road and fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Light Paper, Strong Performance
The trick with making a lighter sheet of paper is to do it without compromising quality or performance. Print quality and pressroom performance, concerns traditionally associated with lightweight papers, simply aren't issues with Catalyst papers.

Why?

The answer involves a unique blend of ingredients and technology. First, Catalyst's lightweight papers are made from hemlock and spruce, trees that are renowned for their long, strong fibres, especially when they come from temperate northern regions like the west coast of Canada. Second, years of research and experimentation have led Catalyst to develop a special proprietary technology for the filler in all our lightweight papers, one that delivers exceptional runnability, opacity, and brightness, and results in fewer offset issues.

Catalyst harnesses all of these elements in Electracote™, a lightweight coated paper that features the same bulk and runnability characteristics of heavier weighted papers. This makes it ideal for magazine, catalogue, and direct mail publishers seeking to reduce mailing costs without compromising quality.

More than 10 years ago, Catalyst saw the benefit a lighter weight paper would offer newspapers, which led to the development of Marathon. It didn't take long before large west coast dailies like the San Diego Union-Tribune and the San Francisco Chronicle were taking advantage of the economic and environmental benefits of publishing on paper as light as 43 gsm. Today, Marathon is used by high-quality, budget-conscious newspaper publishers from coast to coast.

Electrastar™ is another example of Catalyst's ongoing effort to develop new, cost-effective solutions for its customers. This superbright uncoated mechanical paper uses much less fibre than uncoated freesheet, while still maintaining excellent bulk and opacity, making it a great choice for financial reports, retail inserts, magazines, and catalogues.

Catalyst™ Directory paper is used in telephone books, airline schedules, and catalogues. It is available as light as 18 pound (29.3 gsm) and with its excellent bulk, high opacity, and superior runnability, Catalyst Directory paper is recognized as one of the best-performing sheets in the industry.

So how does lighter basis weight paper benefit you?

Saving Pennies at the Post Office
Stephen Carazo, vice-president of operations at Harte-Hanks Inc., can attest to the benefits of lighter weight papers. As publisher of the PennySaver newspaper—a weekly flyer mailed to more than 10 million California households—Harte-Hanks has been printing PennySaver on our Catalyst Directory paper for over 20 years, with big postal savings.

"This is an excellent substrate that has both the runnability and printability characteristics we are looking for, as well as keeping postage expenses lower by virtue of weight," Stephen says. Recently, Harte-Hanks began printing covers of PennySaver editions on Catalyst's Electrastar paper with very positive results.

So while our paper grades may be lighter, our customers are learning they can use them without sacrificing performance or quality while gaining the benefits of lower costs and a softer impact on Mother Nature.

Keeping Pace with the Greener Expectations of Your Customers
Today's advertisers and consumers expect publishers, printers, and retail marketers to make and deliver on stronger environmental commitments up and down their supply chain. When you print on lighter basis weight paper, you reduce your own use of resources—an important signal that is recognized and valued by an increasingly environmentally conscious marketplace.
