The holiday season is a time for showing care and concern for our loved ones and our communities. That means that it’s also a good time to remind ourselves of the similar care and concern required to foster a healthy and sustainable environment.

So, in the spirit of sustainability, this holiday edition of Unfold Online provides a concise summary of the environmental commitments we’ve highlighted and shared throughout 2007 — our Five Steps to Sustainability.

At Catalyst, these commitments mark our intention to create a more responsible product for our customers by keeping environmental, social, and economic interests in balance. We invite you to join us in attaining this all-important balance.

Have a safe and happy holiday.

Five Steps to Sustainability

1. Lighter Paper, Softer Footprint

At Catalyst, we believe that reducing the basis weight of paper is one of the most sensible ways to soften our environmental footprint. That's because lighter paper takes less fiber, fewer raw materials and chemicals, and less energy to produce. Manufacturing lighter products such as Marathon, Electrastar, and Catalyst Directory paper also allows us to fit more linear feet per roll and therefore transport more paper per shipment, which translates into fewer trucks on the road and fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

How is lighter paper directly relevant to your business? It can be a sensible option when you consider freight and postage costs, and the savings from using fewer resources during manufacturing and printing.

2. Read. Recycle. Renew.

As operator of a dedicated paper recycling business, Catalyst processes almost 70% of all the old newspapers and magazines collected in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. Our de-inking plant was the first of its type in Western Canada and is certified under the FSC post-consumer waste standard.

However, as a company focused on a holistic approach to sustainability, Catalyst looks beyond the "100% Recycled" label to consider every step of the production process. For instance, we manufacture our paper using 84% waste fiber and nearly 75% of our fiber comes from certified suppliers. Such ongoing commitment leads to more responsible and competitive products that genuinely reflect forward-thinking social values and environmental priorities.

3. Excellent Sources of Fiber

Catalyst supports the principles of sustainable forest management and expects its fiber suppliers to conform to programs that are recognized in the international marketplace.

While fiber certification promotes good forest stewardship, our chain of custody increases transparency along the full supply chain, enabling customers to track, measure, and report all types of environmentally preferable fiber in the paper they buy from us. We hope our consistent approach to certification is helping to simplify decision making for customers who want a practical way to honour their own commitment to responsible forest management.

4. Crafting a Cleaner Burn

More than ever, people are judging businesses not only on their products, but also by the processes and suppliers that bring those products to market. For example, Catalyst products are manufactured using mostly renewable energy — an industry-leading 89% in fact — that comes from renewable resources such as biomass fuels (clean-burning wood waste) and hydroelectric power.

Making choices that keep renewable energy and other responsible processes in mind says something big about your brand — and it serves as a great example of how environmentally aware businesses are working up and down their supply chains to address the rising expectations of today’s consumers.

5. Rising to the Carbon Challenge

Because greenhouse gases consist mainly of carbon dioxide, “carbon performance” is set to become the standard by which businesses and industries are judged. In our industry, for instance, carbon pedigree is quickly becoming a key indicator of paper quality.

At Catalyst, we say that certain Catalyst Cooled products are “manufactured carbon neutral” because we reduce greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible (by 70% since 1990) and then balance the remaining emissions through the purchase of carbon offsets. Choosing paper suppliers with superior carbon pedigree is broadly beneficial in terms of public perception, consumer preference, brand enhancement, the financial bottom line, and, ultimately, the long-term health of our planet.
