Certified Chain of Custody
For those customers to whom environmental sustainability is a key concern, we offer some paper products that contain 100 per cent fibre certified as coming from sustainably managed forests. We can make this claim because we track our fibre supply through an independently verified chain of custody system.
We developed the chain of custody system with global professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. The system identifies the sources of wood fibre we use and whether or not they are derived from forests independently certified as being well managed.
We have implemented this system — the first of its kind — at our Crofton, Elk Falls, Port Alberni and Powell River divisions.
The independent chain of custody verifies that selected products contain 100 per cent certified wood fibre. We will not make a certification claim for paper containing less than 100 per cent certified wood fibre. Certified wood fibre comes from forests managed to standards set by the Canadian Standards Association, the Forest Stewardship Council or the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. Certified fibre may also contain post-consumer recycled fibre.
Our chain of custody system for fibre sourcing is important to us for the following key reasons:
| As a strong proponent of forest management certification, we are committed to sourcing certified fibre for our products. | |
| We place a high value on the conservation of sensitive forest ecosystems. | |
| Independent certification helps link our values with those of our customers and environmental partners, such as the World Wildlife Fund. | |
| Independent certification provides us with a valuable tool to assure customers that our paper contains wood fibre derived from well-managed forests. | |
| The independent chain of custody complements other efforts, including our annual survey of fibre suppliers, which ensures our fibre purchases promote forest stewardship. | |
