Environmental Leadership
At Catalyst, we believe environmental leadership is an integral part of our business.
As the single largest customer of forest products in B.C. — but with no forest lands of our own — we have both a tremendous responsibility and opportunity to play a leadership role in forest certification, conservation and the broader sustainability movement.
Our support for the environment is driven by a strong desire to make a difference — for forest conservation globally but also for our customers and the consumers who use our products everyday.
We believe in making the most of our precious resources, and take the lead in reusing old newspapers and magazines at both our Paper Recycling Division — the largest facility of its kind in Western Canada — and at our 100% recycled newsprint mill in Arizona.
We are committed to producing products to high environmental standards that our customers and their customers can feel confident about.
And we believe that accomplishing all of this doesn't have to be done at the expense of business performance. Rather, the bottom line can be enhanced through excellent environmental stewardship.
That's why we've partnered with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to support global forest conservation and responsible paper production. It's also why we're part of the Coast Forest Conservation Initiative, which has brought environmental groups and the forest industry together to resolve forest management issues on the central and north coast of British Columbia.
We are gratified that our environmental leadership has earned diverse third-party recognition. During 2007, such recognition included: top-placements in leading annual corporate social responsibility rankings (Globe and Mail Report on Business magazine and Jantzi Research/Maclean's magazine); inclusion in the Conference Board of Canada's Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (the only forest products company so recognized); winning the Metafore Product Innovation Award for the launch of Catalyst Cooled manufactured carbon-neutral paper; and being named a co-recipient of "Gift to the Earth" recognition from the World Wildlife Fund, in connection with the Great Bear Rainforest conservation and management agreement.
We believe a business can be highly competitive and successful as well as an environmental leader — and that being a better steward of the environment is simply the right thing to do.
