WWF Partnership
Since late 2002, Catalyst has partnered with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Canada, part of a global network that works in more than 100 countries to stop the degradation of the planet's natural environment.
Catalyst initially pledged $350,000 over three years to support WWF initiatives, including expanding its activities in B.C. The funding allowed WWF to advance its work in the areas of biodiversity conservation, improved forest management near protected areas and development of "value-chain" paper products produced with high environmental standards - from forest to manufacturer to retailer to consumer.
Catalyst's partnership with and support for WWF is ongoing and multi-faceted. An important current focal point is the development of a clean production initiative at Catalyst mills. Catalyst and WWF staff are working jointly to expand direct measurement of priority emissions and to develop macro impact measures.
Our relationship with the WWF is based on the following mutually agreed-upon principles and shared conservation values:
| Forest conservation is a combination of ecologically representative protection, sound management and restoration. | |
| Responsible forest management includes independent, third-party certification, for which the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) sets a benchmark standard and provides a voice for conservation in the marketplace. | |
| Efficient use of wood fibre, greenhouse gas emission reduction and pollution control are vital elements of responsible forest product use. | |
| Marketplace mechanisms, public awareness and responsible advocacy can and should foster conservation. | |
The WWF partnership enables us to contribute to advancing these shared values, often by focusing on areas where we as a company have particular expertise, such as efficiency of wood fibre use in paper production.
