Many federal and provincial/state regulations govern our paper and pulp manufacturing facilities.
Sourcing Certified Fibre
- Fibre supply is 100% free of illegal logging or genetically modified trees.
- Mills are chain of custody certified to the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification standard (PEFC).
- Actively encourage our fibre suppliers to certify to one of three sustainable forestry management certification standards — Forest Stewardship Council, Canadian Standards Association or the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
Reducing Waste
- Continuously seek proven methods to reduce the amount of solid waste we produce and send to landfills.
- Reuse sludge and wood refuse by-products for energy production at our mills.
Safeguarding Water
- Primary and secondary effluent treatment systems treat wastewater from our mill operations to reduce solids and discharge clean water.
- Regularly monitor flow, temperature, pH, total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), toxicity to fish and other aquatic organisms, adsorbable organic halides (AOX), dissolved oxygen and conductivity, and dioxins and furans in our effluent.
Improving Air Quality
- Dramatically reduced odour and particulate emissions with a decade-long capital investment program of almost $250 million for boiler infrastructure.
- Mills meet stringent air emission standards enabling mill communities to rank among the best in BC for air quality.
